Permeable Pavers in Sarasota

A paver surface that drinks the storm instead of shedding it. Permeable pavers let rain pass through the joints into a stone reservoir below, which is exactly what Sarasota summers ask for.

How a permeable surface works

The pavers sit on open graded stone instead of sand, with small stone chips in wider joints. Rain runs through the joints, into the stone reservoir, and soaks into the ground instead of sheeting across your driveway toward the house or the street. Built correctly, the surface carries cars just like a standard paver drive.

Where it earns its keep in Florida

Driveways and parking courts that flood or sheet water in summer storms
Lots where drainage rules or impervious surface limits are in play
Walkways and patios beside houses where runoff has nowhere to go

Honest note: permeable is not the answer for every site. Soil, water table and slope decide it, so we assess before we recommend. When it fits, we build it to the permeable pavement guidance from CMHA (formerly ICPI), the same standards body behind all our work.

Do permeable pavers clog?

The joints slow down over years as fines wash in. Maintenance is straightforward: the joint stone gets cleaned or refreshed on a schedule, which we can fold into your sealing cycle visits.

Do they cost more than regular pavers?

Usually somewhat more, because the excavation and stone base go deeper. The site visit tells us how much, and the estimate is free. If standing water is already costing you, the math tends to work.

“Before the work I had several inches of water that would not drain properly during heavy rain. Now there is no water at all. The new drain has made a tremendous difference.”

Where permeable pavers earn their keep

The usual call starts the same way: the driveway floods every afternoon in summer, or runoff is washing out a planting bed, or a county rule limits how much impervious surface a lot can add. Permeable pavers solve all three by letting rain fall straight through the joints into an open-graded stone base that holds the water and releases it into the ground slowly – no sheeting, no pooling, no sending the problem to your neighbor’s yard.

They’re at their best on driveways and parking courts with pooling problems, side yards that stay swampy, and new construction that’s tight against impervious-coverage limits. One thing to know up front: the base is deeper and the stone is specific, so a permeable system costs more up front than a standard install. We’ll tell you when standard pavers with better grading will solve your water problem for less – and when they won’t.
